Craft Hotel

For this project, the brief was to redesign and repurpose an existing building, the Nehsons building at 24 Peck Seah Street. My idea was to transform it into a “Craft Hotel”, to highlight the process and effort that going into making a piece of art and champion the artist behind the art, to celebrate them as works of art themselves.

Adapting an office building into a hotel poses several difficulties, one being that the room layout had to be done around the structures that were already in place. Modularity and flexibility are the key concepts carried through the design of the hotel to cater to the needs of all kinds of artists while also ensuring the longevity of the hotel to adapt to new requirements in the future. The concept of modularity and flexibility is further bolstered by the use of the adapTable in the guestrooms and the Co-Crafting floor, which is a piece of furniture that I designed to meet such needs. The facade is brought to life by turning window spaces into mini galleries for artists living in the rooms to showcase their work, as they work, to the public.
